Junk removal in Westminster

Three Oconee County recycling centers have Westminster addresses, and they take a good share of everyday junk. For what they turn away, or more than fits in a pickup, we haul it and price it from a photo first.

Three centers with Westminster addresses

Oconee County runs 11 staffed recycling centers, and three of them have Westminster addresses:

CenterAddress
Richland230 Richland Rd
Toccoa4167 Toccoa Hwy
Long Creek186 Old Unity Rd

Like every Oconee center, they’re for county residents only. They open at 7am and close at 7pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and they’re shut on Wednesday and Sunday.

What do the centers take and refuse?

They take metal, appliances and recyclables. They refuse tube TVs, mattresses and building debris.

ItemAt these centers?
Large appliances and scrap metalYes
Used oil, filters, antifreeze, car batteriesYes
Passenger tiresYes, 4 per person per year
Flat-screen TVs and monitorsYes, in the donation boxes
Tube (CRT) TVsNo
MattressesNo, Strawberry Farm in Seneca only
Construction debrisNo, C&D landfill in Seneca

The tube TV row is the tricky one. South Carolina banned TVs and computer monitors from its landfills starting July 1, 2011, and Oconee’s centers don’t accept CRTs at all. Our TV disposal guide covers where they can go. If you’d rather hand it off, we haul tube TVs for a $20–$35 fee per set, since recyclers charge to take them.

Where does construction debris go?

To the county’s C&D landfill on Wells Highway in Seneca, not to the recycling centers. It’s Oconee’s only landfill, and the Visit Oconee website warns that it’s filling up. It takes building debris, yard and land-clearing debris, furniture, pool liners, and even fiberglass boats cut into 4-foot sections. It refuses household trash, electronics, cardboard, metal and liquid paint.

If you’re tearing out a deck or a bathroom, tile, brick and concrete fill our trailer by weight before they fill it by space, so we load them only about a foot deep.

Brush, fence wire and farm leftovers

On farm and rural land, the junk tends to sit outside: limbs from the last storm, a rotted hay feeder, coils of barbed wire, a stack of old tin roofing behind the barn. We load it where it lies. Metal goes to recycling, and brush and debris go to the proper county facility. See yard debris removal for brush piles, and garage cleanouts for the shop or carport that filled up over the years.

What will a Westminster pickup cost?

It depends on how much of our 15-cubic-yard trailer the job fills. The minimum is $75–$95 for about 2 cubic yards, half a trailer runs $250–$320, and a full trailer $450–$550. Mattresses, refrigerant appliances, tires and tube TVs each add a small fee, and stairs add $25–$50. Every step is on our pricing page, and we confirm the price from a photo or a quick look before we load.

Westminster: questions

Can I drop off a tube TV at a Westminster center?

No. Oconee County centers take flat-screen TVs and monitors in donation boxes but not CRT tube TVs, and South Carolina has banned TVs from its landfills since July 2011.

Do the Westminster centers take construction debris?

No. Building debris goes to the county’s C&D landfill on Wells Highway in Seneca, which also takes yard debris, land-clearing debris and furniture.

How many tires can I take to an Oconee County center?

Four passenger tires per person per year. For more than that, ask the county solid waste office at (864) 888-1440.

Can you haul brush and old fencing off farm land?

Yes. Brush, limbs, fence wire and rusted tin go by how much trailer space they fill, and the metal goes to recycling rather than a landfill.
