Does Oconee County pick up junk?
No. Oconee County has no curbside collection. Residents take household trash to one of 11 staffed recycling centers, and the county ships it to a landfill in Homer, Georgia. If you live inside Walhalla’s city limits, ask the city what it collects at the curb. Otherwise, a couch, a dead chest freezer or a shed full of junk means a truck, a trailer and an afternoon, or a hauler.
Where are the Walhalla-area centers?
Five Forks is in Walhalla and Mt. Rest is in Mountain Rest. Both keep the county’s schedule:
| Center | Address | Open |
|---|---|---|
| Five Forks | 210 Camp Rd, Walhalla | Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat, 7am to 7pm |
| Mt. Rest | 107 Tunnel Town Rd, Mountain Rest | Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat, 7am to 7pm |
They’re for Oconee County residents only. They take recyclables, scrap metal, large appliances, used oil and filters, antifreeze, car batteries, and passenger tires up to four per person per year. Flat-screen TVs and monitors go in the donation boxes. Our Oconee County dump guide lists all 11 centers.
What won’t they take?
Mattresses, tube TVs and building debris.
- Mattresses go only to the Strawberry Farm center at 301 N. Strawberry Farm Rd in Seneca.
- CRT tube TVs aren’t accepted at any Oconee center.
- Construction debris goes to the county’s C&D landfill on Wells Highway in Seneca, which also takes furniture and yard debris. It’s Oconee’s only landfill.
So a cleanout with an old box TV, two mattresses and a torn-out bathroom vanity has three different destinations. When we haul it, metal and appliances go to recycling and the rest to the proper county facility.
Can you take down an old shed?
In most cases, yes. Sheds are priced on their own from a photo, in the $350–$650 range. Send one picture of the outside and one of the inside, since whatever is still stored in it has to come out too. If there’s concrete block or a slab involved, keep in mind that heavy material fills the trailer by weight before it fills by space, so it’s loaded only about a foot deep. Our shed removal page has more.
The junk inside a barn or outbuilding is a simpler job: a seized-up push mower, feed sacks, rolls of old fence wire, a chest freezer that quit years ago. That goes by how much trailer space it takes, like any other load.
Clearing out a mobile home
Mobile homes make up a bigger share of housing here than in South Carolina as a whole. In the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2015 to 2019, about 22 percent of Oconee County’s housing units were mobile homes, against 15.4 percent statewide.
Emptying one before a sale, or after a death in the family, is a house cleanout in a smaller space: furniture, beds, closets, the kitchen, and whatever was stored under the porch. We load from inside, narrow hallway and front steps included, and sweep up where things were. Refrigerators and freezers carry a $25–$40 fee because of the refrigerant; appliance removal covers washers, stoves and the rest.
For a first number on a Walhalla job, the estimator gives a ballpark range, and a photo texted to (864) 555-0142 gets you a confirmed price.
