Clemson move-out: what to do with furniture

Clemson residence halls close May 1, 2027 at 10am, with no summer storage. A two-week plan for the couch, mattress and mini fridge you won’t take home.

Empty moving boxes lined up in a living room

Published . 4 minute read.

Clemson’s spring 2027 term ends April 30. The residence halls close the next morning, and commencement follows on May 6 and 7. In that one week, a lot of furniture that made sense in August turns into a problem: the futon nobody wants to drive home, a mattress from an off-campus lease, a mini fridge with a year of frost in it. Here is how to deal with all of it without paying more than you have to.

When is Clemson move-out in 2027?

Residence halls close Saturday, May 1, 2027, at 10am. University Housing doesn’t offer summer storage, so everything you own has to leave the room before you check out.

The housing move-out page adds a few rules worth knowing:

  • Check-out meetings are scheduled with your Resident Community Mentor (RCM).
  • Beds should be left assembled at their original height.
  • Bicycles left behind are impounded and recycled.

Off-campus leases follow their own dates, so check yours. Don’t assume it ends the same week as the dorms.

What can go to the curb in Clemson?

If you live inside City of Clemson limits, the city offers curbside bulk pickup when you call (864) 653-2053 at least 24 hours ahead. The details below are as the city’s sanitation page describes them, so confirm them when you call.

The page lists items such as sofas, chairs, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers, plus tires. It asks that appliance doors be removed or chained shut, and it mentions a small fee for tires and appliances. Contractor debris isn’t collected, and the city’s curbside recycling has been suspended since August 1, 2022.

If you live in an apartment complex, its own trash rules come first. Ask the office before you leave anything beside the dumpster.

Where can students donate furniture?

Two easy options: the Goodwill store at 1051 Tiger Blvd in Clemson, and the Oconee Habitat ReStore, which picks up donations in Clemson.

The ReStore is at 130 Bountyland Rd in Seneca, (864) 888-2118. It refuses mattresses and box springs, non-working appliances, water heaters, CRT TVs, desktop computers and printers, clothing and opened paint. Damaged furniture is up to the driver, so describe rips and stains honestly when you book. Ask for a pickup date early, well before finals week.

Goodwill doesn’t publish a mattress or appliance policy for its local stores, so call before you load a mini fridge into the car. Our furniture donation guide lists the other stores nearby.

What about mattresses and mini fridges?

Mattresses are the hardest thing to place. The ReStore won’t take them, and the city’s bulk list as excerpted doesn’t mention them, so ask when you call (864) 653-2053.

Pickens County, which includes Clemson, runs eight recycling centers open Monday to Saturday, 7:30am to 7:20pm. They take bagged trash, appliances, electronics and paint from residents, not businesses, and you’ll need the county’s residency decal. If you rent in Clemson, ask the county how the decal works for your address before you count on it. The county landfill in Liberty takes brown goods like furniture and mattresses only during posted windows, so check its site before driving out.

A working mini fridge is often worth more to an incoming student than to a store. Unplug it two days before move-out, prop the door open over a towel, and let it defrost.

How should you plan the last two weeks?

Start 14 days out, and work from what sells to what has to be hauled.

  1. Two weeks out: List every large item in the room or apartment and who owns it. Shared purchases are the easiest to forget.
  2. Twelve days out: Post anything worth selling. Incoming students and summer renters are your buyers, so price it to move.
  3. Ten days out: Call the ReStore at (864) 888-2118 to book a pickup for furniture in good shape.
  4. One week out: If you’re inside city limits, call (864) 653-2053 to set up curbside bulk pickup.
  5. Five days out: Drop small donations at Goodwill on Tiger Blvd.
  6. Two days out: Defrost the mini fridge. Book a haul for whatever is left.
  7. Move-out day: Leave the bed assembled, take your bike, and photograph the empty room for your records.

Can roommates split one haul?

Yes. Hauling is priced by how much room the load takes in the trailer, so four roommates with one couch, two mattresses and a desk pay for one load, not four.

That example takes up roughly 5 to 6 cubic yards, so with Seneca Junk Removal it lands between a quarter trailer ($140–$180) and a half ($250–$320), plus $15–$25 for each mattress. Split four ways, each person pays a share of one load instead of a minimum charge of their own. Put everything in one spot, ideally on the ground floor, because carrying down a flight of stairs adds $25–$50.

What do landlords do between leases?

Landlords and property managers face the same pile on a deadline: furniture a tenant left behind, a stained mattress, a broken grill on the porch. Before hauling anything a tenant left, make sure the lease and state rules allow it, and ask your attorney if you aren’t sure. Then photograph what was left and clear it in one visit. See rental cleanouts for how that works, our Clemson service area page, or get a ballpark from the junk removal estimator.

Quick answers

When do Clemson residence halls close in May 2027?

University Housing lists the close as May 1, 2027 at 10am, the morning after the spring term ends. There’s no summer storage, so everything has to leave your room before you check out.

Does the City of Clemson pick up couches at the curb?

The city’s sanitation page lists sofas and chairs among its curbside bulk items, picked up when you call (864) 653-2053 at least 24 hours ahead. Confirm the details when you call.

Can I leave furniture next to my apartment complex’s dumpster?

Only if your complex says you can. Ask the office first, since cleanup of furniture left behind can be charged back against your lease.

Can roommates split the cost of one haul?

Yes. A haul is priced by how much room the load takes in the trailer, so roommates who put everything out together pay for one load and split it however they like.
